New Driver Resources

Are you interested in starting your career in truck driving and need help getting started? While we require a minimum of one year of experience for our TGS drivers, here are some resources to get you started as a Class A driver. Once you meet our driver requirements, don’t hesitate to contact us about becoming a TGS driver.

Get your License!

After gaining your commercial learner’s permit (CLP), you can apply for your CDL with your state licensing agency. The FMCSA is a great resource to get started as a CDL driver. If you are based in California, here is California’s CDL handbook, which the FMCSA requires.

Look for Positions that Offer Training.

With a CLP, you have the benefit of training under the supervision of a certified CDL holder. Once you have your Class A CDL, you can apply to more positions that welcome beginner drivers, some even offering training on the job. Companies like Swift Transportation, J.B. Hunt, and C.R. England typically welcome new CDL drivers.

Consider Endorsements.

Gaining endorsements are a great way to set yourself apart in a job market. Common endorsements for Class A drivers are HazMat and Doubles/ Triples.

Consider an Apprenticeship Program.

Apprenticeship programs are a great way to get experience on the job. Some require a CDL prior to application, while others will allow you to receive it under their training.
